Design Problem

Problem Statement

Streambank erosion has occurred at Cripple Creek, located near the Eagle Bend Hay Pasture in Ivanhoe, Virginia. The U.S. Forest Service, or USFS, has requested that Trout Unlimited create a streambank stabilization plan to help reduce the erosion of the streambank. Trout Unlimited is collaborating with the Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering Department senior design group, Team Cripple Creek, to design the streambank stabilization solution. The team has a budget of $500,000 to create a design for the streambank along the USFS land.

Goals

The overall goal of the project is to reduce streambank erosion. The secondary goal is to create an ecosystem that fosters a healthy living environment for fish and wildlife.

Objectives

  • Collect preliminary data on the area in StreamStats and local Lidar

  • Visit the site twice:

    • Initial Site Visit: complete an initial assessment and familiarize ourselves with the site location

    • Second Site Visit: complete a full site survey of the study area

  • Compile standards and literature on stream restoration and practices to implement that prevent erosion

  • Determine an appropriate bank erosion mitigation plan

  • Conduct a hydraulic analysis in HEC-RAS to confirm that the design can pass the design flows

  • Complete a final cost analysis
